Self Help Is Best For Overcoming Shyness

By Hans S Delane

For people who are extremely shy, the idea of talking to new people makes them quite nervous. The moment you think about it, there is a churn in your stomach. Serious shyness has a potential for deep impact on the social activities of people. At some point in time, millions of people suffer from a disease called social anxiety. There is a remedy for this disorder which is called cognitive behavioral treatment.

Some scientists think that the familial conditioning is responsible for the emotional development of people. It looks as if DNA of certain people has been designed for shyness. Some people can overcome the disorder but few of them suffer this problem even till their old age. The current conditions of today's life are also partly responsible for it, as we live in a world where we do not need extensive face to face contact. The internet is partly to blame for this since the people become used to interaction via email and undertake computer games, which leads to retardation of their social characteristics and skills. Some people try to work on this disorder and there are activities that one can undertake to combat this issue.

Firstly, you need to find out what triggers the chain of thoughts in our mind. You can't be feeling shy in all situations. When do you really feel uncomfortable? Pose a question for yourself about this at the beginning itself. Does your mind start making negative predictions on its own without any logic? Try and challenge the negative thoughts before you start believing them and accepting them as true.

As a shy person, you need to start ingraining the thought the what you are thinking is only a guess. Do not focus too much on anything that reconfirms your belief on anxiety. Instead, shift your focus and attention on something that is opposite. In reality, one cannot please everyone at the same time.

Put yourself right in the front and confront the negativity. It is a good idea to expose yourself to the situation as you yourself intentionally put yourself in situations which make you anxious. One of the best ways to deal with this is to constantly start facing situations so that the anxiety softens its grips and erodes away. The end objective should be to attract what you are fearful of and to realize that it isn't a big deal. You may have a rumbling feeling in your stomach, but it is worth doing as soon as possible. The more you delay it, the more you will torture yourself.

Shyness is not associated with any psychological disorder, but is considered to be a personality trait. The degree of shyness varies from person to person. Some people feel very anxious when they face an audience, while there are some who want to lead an extremely solitary life. This is not the right way to live life. Some people treat shyness like a cocoon. It gives them safety, warmth and quietude. At the same time, it can turn out to be desolate, confined and dark.

Ask your family members and friends to support you. When you are in a difficult situation they will lend their help and provide pointers to you. If you know that there is someone out there to hand hold you, it becomes quite easy and comforting. Very soon, you will realize that you are gradually losing your fears and gaining confidence. When you attain a good social life, you will have a realization that how easy and comforting it is to meet people.

One now has many remedies to minimize shyness. Start taking one step a day or week, which will ensure that shyness turns out to be history. One can try a lot of other things as well, but these pointers can help you get to the right direction. - 31877
